Food Assistance

A happy man finding fresh produce in a store.

CalFresh can help you and your family.

CalFresh provides monthly food benefits to individuals and families with low-income and provides economic benefits to communities. CalFresh is the largest food program in California and provides an essential hunger safety net.

CalFresh benefits can help buy nutritious foods for a better diet. CalFresh benefits stretch food budgets, allowing individuals and families to afford nutritious food, including more fruit, vegetables and other healthy foods.

The amount of benefits a household receives is dependent on household size countable income, and monthly expenses, such as housing and utilities. The program issues monthly benefits on an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CalFresh the same thing as food stamps, SNAP or EBT?

The CalFresh Program is California's version of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or food stamps. The program issues monthly electronic benefits that can be used to buy most foods at many markets and food stores.

EBT is a card that looks and works like a debit or credit card but is loaded with food stamps (also known as SNAP or CalFresh benefits) and/or cash benefits. You can use it at stores that accept EBT. You'll get the Golden State Advantage card once you're approved for benefits.
